For slab marble, keep a larger contingency than you would for basic tile because cutouts, broken slabs, access problems, seam changes, and edge work can change the final price after measurement.

Tile and Stone Setter Wages in the 10 Largest Metros (BLS)
Marble is labor-intensive, so the local setter wage is the best single explanation for why the same bathroom is quoted very differently in Chicago and Dallas. A 100 sq ft bathroom at 48 planning hours is roughly $1,285 in setter wages at the national median, against an installed range of $4,500–$16,500 for that scope. The gap is the stone itself, thinset, waterproofing, sealer, the helper's hours and the contractor's overhead and profit, which is exactly where you should ask a bidder to itemize.
Marble Estimate Notes
Marble pricing is sensitive to quality, layout, and preparation. A low material price can still become an expensive job if the floor needs leveling, waterproofing, crack isolation, or complicated cuts around fixtures and drains.
For bid comparisons, ask whether sealing, old surface removal, underlayment, edge finishing, freight, and waste are included. Marble is a natural product, so replacement material may not match later if the order is short.
